Microsoft Certified: Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert

Microsoft's expert-level credential for engineers who design, build and run production multi-agent systems on Microsoft Foundry. The blueprint also names MCP, A2A, LangGraph and LangChain.

What it signals

Practical assessment: Includes interactive, code or case-study items (3 of 4) Practical assessment
Includes interactive, code or case-study items. Proctored role-based exam with possible case studies and interactive items; labs not confirmed and duration not published.
Identity assurance: Proctored with identity verification (4 of 4) Identity assurance
Proctored with identity verification. Proctored, scheduled through Pearson VUE (official programme). English only (official). Microsoft Learn documentation is accessible during expert exams (open-book to learn.microsoft.com only, per official exam-experience page). Online (OnVUE) vs test-centre not confirmed on this exam's page.
Depth: Specialty or expert (4 of 4) Depth
Specialty or expert. Expert level.
Experience expected: 2 to 3 years (3 of 4) Experience expected
2 to 3 years. Expects production agentic deployment experience, Python proficiency and Azure solution experience on top of an Associate cert; no official year count.
Portability: Mixed (2 of 4) Portability
Mixed. MCP, A2A, LangGraph, RAG and orchestration patterns transfer, but implementation, tracing and governance are Microsoft Foundry and Azure specific.
Verifiability: Public badge or registry (4 of 4) Verifiability
Public badge or registry. Credential is shareable via a Microsoft Learn verification link/transcript carrying an 'Online Verifiable' tag that an employer can open (profile must be public).

For hiring managers

  • This is Microsoft's first Expert-level credential dedicated to multi-agent / agentic AI engineering; holders must already hold the AI-103 Associate certification, so it implies two proctored passes.
  • Blueprint is unusually modern and cross-framework: MCP, A2A, LangGraph, LangChain, Agent Framework, context compaction, LLM-as-a-judge, guardrails at every tool-call boundary, Zero Trust per-agent identity, and blue/green/canary releases.
  • The credential is brand new (beta from July 2026, apparently GA around end of September 2026), so few people hold it and no official practice assessment exists yet.
  • Annual renewal is an unproctored open-book quiz, so a multi-year-old credential rests on one proctored sitting.

Verifying it

Candidate shares a link from their Microsoft Learn profile: either a per-credential Share link (credentials carry an 'Online Verifiable' tag) or a transcript share link / PDF. The Learn profile must be in public view for the shared credential to be verifiable.

What it covers

Published exam outline

  • Architect multi-agent solutions 15-20%
  • Develop multi-agent solutions in Azure 30-35%
  • Evaluate, optimize, and monitor multi-agent solutions 20-25%
  • Secure, govern, and deploy multi-agent solutions 20-25%

By topic

GenAI apps: Substantial (20 to 35%) (3 of 4) GenAI apps
Substantial (20 to 35%). Prompt engineering, fine-tuning strategy, multi-agent RAG, knowledge integration, caching, evaluation and LLM-as-a-judge span parts of the 30-35% develop domain and the 20-25% evaluate domain, roughly 20-30%.
Agents: Core focus (over 35%) (4 of 4) Agents
Core focus (over 35%). The entire blueprint is framed around multi-agent systems: orchestration patterns, tools, MCP, A2A, memory and human-in-the-loop dominate well over 35%.
Classical ML: Touched on (under 10%) (1 of 4) Classical ML
Touched on (under 10%). Only a fine-tuning strategy objective and Hugging Face Transformers use; no model-training domain.
Operations: Substantial (20 to 35%) (3 of 4) Operations
Substantial (20 to 35%). Observability, tracing, drift detection, cost and SLA monitoring, release strategies, testing and CI/CD account for roughly 25-30%.
Data: Touched on (under 10%) (1 of 4) Data
Touched on (under 10%). Chunking, embeddings and memory storage appear inside RAG and memory objectives, under 10%.
Responsible AI: Substantial (20 to 35%) (3 of 4) Responsible AI
Substantial (20 to 35%). Security, authentication, Key Vault, red teaming, guardrails, HAX/responsible AI design and Zero Trust compliance mapping total roughly 20-25%.

Exam details

Who the provider says it is for. 'An expert-level practitioner who has subject matter expertise in designing, building, and optimizing scalable, production-ready, multi-agent AI systems and workflows' who manages development from design to production. Roles: AI Edge Engineer, AI Engineer, Developer, Solution Architect.

Format
Microsoft does not publish per-exam formats. Official question types across the programme: multiple choice, drag and drop, build list, hot area, active screen, case studies, and (on some role-based exams) labs. Microsoft does not publish which exams contain labs; the exam duration (100 vs 120 minutes) is the usual signal and it is not shown on the AI-500 page.
Delivery
Proctored, scheduled through Pearson VUE (official programme). English only (official). Microsoft Learn documentation is accessible during expert exams (open-book to learn.microsoft.com only, per official exam-experience page). Online (OnVUE) vs test-centre not confirmed on this exam's page.
Code or hands-on work
Python is the stated language. Blueprint is implementation-heavy: building MCP servers/clients (Azure Functions, Logic Apps, API Management), A2A integration, orchestration with Agent Framework, LangChain and LangGraph, Hugging Face Transformers, tracing in Foundry, CI/CD with infrastructure-as-code. Labs possible but unconfirmed.
Prerequisites
Required: Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (exam AI-103). It is the only accepted prerequisite listed (official).
Recommended experience
Experience developing AI and machine learning, deploying agentic systems in production, and orchestrating agent logic with Microsoft Foundry; proficient in Python; experience with Azure compute, network, storage and data services; familiarity with Microsoft Agent Framework, MCP, RAG and LangGraph. No year count stated.
Renewal
Free, online, UNPROCTORED, open-book renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn (study guide states expert certifications expire annually and renew via a free online assessment); six-month eligibility window before expiry. If it lapses, the full exam must be retaken.
